ICAAN, the international organization that maintains the worlds internet registry, made a significant progress towards furthering the domain name registrations. ICAAN will now allow applicants for new names to self-select their domain name so that choices are most appropriate for their customers or potentially the most marketable.
It is expected that applicants will apply for targeted community strings such as (the existing) .travel for the travel industry and .cat for the Catalan community (as well as generic strings like .brandname or .yournamehere). More details on this on Pro Media Blog.
This could hurt small business owners who are branded on their family names, communities or even their products. In the new ICAAN proposal Trademarks will not be automatically reserved. But there will be an objection-based mechanism for trademark owners where their arguments for protection will be considered.
ICANN also approved top – level domain names in scripts including Arabic, Cyrillic and other non-Latin scripts. It passed a resolution to eliminate domain tasting, a practice of using the grace periods to register domain names in bulk to see which ones are profitable.
