Popular Photography reviewers Phil Ryan & Dan Richards do a complete review of the Nikon D700.
The review is more on the specifications rather than a hands on. What struck me is the comment that the D700 uses the same battery as the D300. We have heard a lot of issues with the D300 battery. Many photographers complained of the low charge contained by the battery. A lot many photographers also complained about the battery functioning with any of the VR lenses.

The SB 800 is also being replaced by the SB 900 flash. The review does not mention whether the SB 800 will not work with the new D700 or whether the newer SB 900 will have more functionalities with the new Nikon D700.

You have to turn VR off when the camera is off otherwise the lens will drain the battery. This could be the reason people are not keeping a charge.
