Maine is beautiful year round. While most of the tourists come to enjoy the summer & autumn, in Winter Maine becomes an attractive destination for photographers, especially if you are like me, who loves snow & sunset. And you do not have to travel far in Maine either. There are numerous photo locations in South Maine, that are beautiful destinations for observing & capturing the beauty of the rocky coasts often covered in snow at sunset.
The snow covered rocks in the picture above is at sunset in one of the most beautiful & desolate state parks in Southern Maine overlooking the Cushing Island.

The Shore Road, a backroad along coastal Maine, takes you through Cape Elizabeth, winding through various hidden gems of Maine. There are numerous spots along the drive that offers numerous photo opportunities, especially at sunset.
The by ways and backroads around the Nonesuch River around Portland & feeds into the Scarborough Marsh. This is a vast, over 3000 acres of salt water marsh that freezes almost completely in the winter. The picture above is the southern view of the frozen marsh at sunset.
There is something about sunsets in winter that I love. The air is always crisp and there are always so few tourists that I found most of these beautiful destinations to myself most of the time. Of course, winter or snow does nothing to keep photographers away, and it is likely that if you are in one of these amazing places, you will have the company of other photographers.
South Maine is a popular destination for tourists in winter and places like Portland, Old Orchard, Ogunquit, York are likely to have some crowds, but nothing that you would have to worry about. The picture above is near Prout’s Neck park, another photogenic hidden gem in Southern Maine for photographers.
