Devotion, by Patty Smith, is not the usual type of that I would pick up and put in my bag. Of course the title of the book sounded interesting, especially in the context of the life of it’s author Patty Smith.
I’d have read Just Kids or maybe Year of the Monkey in lines with my love for travel writings & similar inspiring books, but Devotion turned out to be a combination of both travel as well as powerful insights into love, passion, art & competitiveness of the author.
Subsequently, Devotion became a compelling reason for me to start a small podcast on Purposeful Happiness. In many ways, in Devotion, Patty Smith unfurls intrinsically complex situations in a rather simplistic way, she moves on without sticking to one particular frame of mind.
In later years (I read Devotion first in 2014) I have gone back to Patty’s book more than once – I have loved her writing tactics, both the simplicity as well as the innate naturalness of presenting complex emotional and mental conflicts.
