In a quiet end of the southern end of Arrowsic Island on the Kennebec River, is one of the hidden gems of Maine, one of the most beautiful Maine Lighthouses that you can reach by land and includes an interesting quarter mile walk though the woods, is a solitary but perfectly unique Squirrel Point lighthouse.
Maine boasts over 60 lighthouses along the north eastern US coast, some of the rockiest and steepest coasts on the Atlantic Ocean, of which close to 25 can be reached by land. The rest of them lie offshore and many of those require significant planning & arrangements to be photographed.
The drive to Squirrel Point Lighthouse goes through the beautiful town of Bath. Bath boasts of the big Naval shop in New England but the country inside is extremely photogenic. The walk from the parking lot to the Squirrel Point Lighthouse goes through a hill, across a bridge over a tidal stream and a winding walk along the river bank.
Sunsets are beautiful all over Maine. The day I took this picture in summer, sunset coincided with a slowly rising tide. And along with the water came in a small raft of sea otters. They played around and any time my feet were in the water, since I was moving around the Squirrel Point Lighthouse for different view points, they would curiously come close and circle around for a while before they vanished as quietly as they came.
My ebook on Maine Lighthouses has got more details. If you are planning to go there, be aware that at extreme high tides, the walk from the parking lot to the lighthouse goes under water. And if you happen to go during a hunting season, take adequate precautions since these grounds are open to hunting during seasons.
