One of the most beautiful waterfalls in the min-South Americas is the Cedar Falls in the Petit Jean park. An additional perk if you are driving from Memphis Tennessee, is the beautiful drive on Route 64 & into the Ozark mountains & through the backroads into the Ouachita Mountains in Arkansas.
The Cedar Falls trail starts at the Mather Lodge in Petit Jean State Park. It is approximately 1 mile each way, to & from the Cedar Falls. Almost a third of that is steeply walking down into the 200 feet gorge, which could be strenuous if you are not used to these hilly walks.
The first view of the Cedar Falls is this gorgeous 95 feet cascade surrounded completely by rocks, mounting almost to twice the height on the sides.
The waterfall is almost always busy. Finding the right time to have the waterfall completely to yourself to photograph is a rarity.
The Cedar Creek Canyon by itself is a major photography subject, but the view of the Cedar Falls looking up from the creek could be beautiful. I photographed the falls & a part of the Cedar Creek close to sunset, while the waterfall just caught the final rays of the sun.
Almost three quarters of the walk from the Mather Lodge trail head to the waterfall is on almost flat trail, with some minor ups & downs as you can expect as if you are walking on the bed of the river.
Many of these images are available in prints from the online shop.
