Existing between Dream & Reality

One of the film makers who I have always admired since my school days is Ingmar Bergman (Ernst Ingmar Bergman). The  Swedish playwright, director, writer & producer who worked in film, television, theater and radio is a close kin to Indian art legend Satyajit Ray.

His films, motivated by his personal experiences in life, are influenced by his moral & religious upbringing. The second strong influence has been religious art. Combining these, his stories and screen plays identified characters in search for moral standards of judgment & a rigorous examination of action and motive, in terms of good and bad, right and wrong.

His films naturally revealed existential fears, sexual anxieties, demonic visitations, realistic ambiguity, psychic visions, mortality & these reveal like a spontaneous manifestation of the artist’s subconscious.

For years I have been conceptualizing fine arts black & white photography projects within the same boundaries and codes of this mentor. And over the years of my professional photography life I have realized that “writing” is a mandatory skill for me, even though my art work may not demand that apparently. Without being able to write the concepts, there is no possibility of creative contribution from fellow artists, no critique, no refinement!

I would be curious to know if & how such film directors as Bergman have influenced any photographers’ style, methods and art.
