Making Relatable Fine Art Indoor Nude Portraits

Many fine arts nude photography is done outdoors, using the vastness of the space & using the natural forms & shapes to construct the frame. But a wider variety of moods and circumstances can be done for fine arts indoor nude photos as well.

Fine Arts Indoor Nude Photography

Here are some of the considerations for indoor nude mood photography:

  1. Ambient lighting can be combined very effectively with strobe lights introducing color casts, flares etc
  2. Indoor photography is almost always more relatable
  3. Choosing an indoor location familiar with your model puts the artist at easy & makes the images realistic
  4. Normal, everyday items serve as props that seamlessly integrate with the mood & finally,
  5. You can shoot continuously, almost on a 24×7 schedule on a schedule that is relaxed & in case you wish to switch up moods and props you can do that quickly

Making Nude Photography Relatable

One of the main reasons to go for fine arts indoor nude photography is to keep it relatable. My personal style is always to keep it bold, with the artist taking the center stage, meaning, taking up over half of the frame.

Use of negative spaces

Carefully looking at negative spaces have a tremendous impact on the final print. And in indoor compositions, negative spaces are easily available to bolster the composition.

Using natural movements & poses

Capturing the model in her natural, carefree style is important. As if the photographer does not exist. The viewer gets a peek into someone “just like them” in the frame.

I simply ask my artist to go about her work, pretending I am not there. Sometimes though, if a particular pose strikes me, I might ask her to do a few more shots around that pose, but generally I would not interrupt any session. This is something I have learnt from one of my favorite photographers Jeanloup Seiff.

In these pictures I have shown how negative spaces can be used to strengthen the composition and how ambient window light can be combined in some cases with flash to create very moody pictures.

In the follow up to this post, I will show some of the retro style fine art nude images done quite simply by choosing appropriate indoor setup.
