Autumn is the time of the year when New England brightens up with the colors of fall. The states of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, upstate Connecticut around the Litchfield areas, upstate Massachusetts & New York, become beautiful to photograph fall foliage, the best time being late August through September into late October.
North eastern Maine and especially along route 302 through Fryeburg into New Hampshire’s White Mountains areas are one of the best places to look out for excellent photogenic places for photographing fall colors in Maine.
Some of the best places in New Hampshire are Mt. Washington, Franconia Notch, Echo Lake & Artist Bluff, Cannon Mountain, Flume Gorge & Hidden River and my favorite drive on Kancamagus. Stop by the small towns, find that small river or brook and follow it for some unique spots.
Some of the best places in Maine for fall foliage range from Portland all the way up to the Bar Harbor & Acadia National Park. Maine in general is sparsely populated but gets very crowded during the summer, lobster seasons and fall. So people looking for natural beauty and some quiet travel far up north to Baxter, Rangeley Lake, Camden & Moosehead Lakes. Towards the east, on the way to White Mountains in New Hampshire, you will found hidden gems with glorious autumn colors, small habitations and almost untouched natural beauty everywhere.
Using a wide angle lens, a tripod and spiked shoes that can help you tread on the slippery stones, you can get some magnificent compositions that regular tourists will not be ready to do!
This photograph was taken at the end of a day long drive in Kancamagus Highway in New Hampshire after photographing the fall foliage in eastern Maine.
