A serene Swift river during late autumn / early winter when the flow has really slowed down and the leaves are almost done changing colors. The last autumn leaves are falling from the trees with the wind which created the perfect mood for this image.
The river & several photogenic locations in the same area is about 100 miles east of Portland in South Maine.
The Swift river runs along the White Mountains National Forest in New Hampshire and the notable tourist route 16 or popularly known as the Kancamagus Highway. There are numerous waterfalls in this region. The Swift river itself provides innumerable photography options including waterfall and some smaller cascades, both upstream & downstream.
While tourists mainly visit this place to admire the fall foliage, you would find winter to be another fascinating season. Most of the waterfalls and the smaller streams would freeze. Some completely while others would be somewhat frozen at the surface only.
I’ve seen rivers and waterfalls completely frozen and you get to photograph some fantastic work of nature in the form of icicles and ice patterns. There are several parts of the Swift River that also freezes. All you need to do is to explore up and down the river while you are traveling.
