There are certain pictures that, without a word attached to it, you would know is New York City. I have photographed these streets of New York City time and again for over 20 years. And even now, I can feel myself in these streets the moment I take a look at the pictures.

I have met some amazing people on these streets. People who had me stare in sadness, amazement & sometimes even in awe. But whatever it was, it was worth the time and the effort.
I remember having done a small documentary back in 2002-05 on street children of New York city. It was an eye opener. I was new to the city and it was my first photo documentary on the lives of some teens living on the streets of New York City. I found out that most of them are not truly homeless, many have good school education but they have decided to leave home in search of a different lifestyle, often hopping from one city to another, hitching rides or on trains & sometimes living off the kindness of friends & strangers in the city.
The city is well known for her pets. And they come in all sorts of shapes, sizes & attitudes. There are big ones and there are tiny ones. But they all have in common is the New Yorker attitude.
The sheer vitality of life in New York City is amazing to watch. As if age has co consequences. It is as though life is lived every moment, in its harshness, uncertainty, pleasantness, confusion but certainly with a sense of freedom that is hard to inculcate in oneself unless you are born here.
Tourists make up a significantly interesting part especially in and around Times Square & Manhattan. Many are eternally confused, many are overwhelmed by the hugeness that New York City boasts in almost all aspects of her lifestyle. And many are too engrossed absorbing as much of the culture in their transits.
The more quaint spots, the East end for example or further you go from the eye catching blitz of downtown advertising, the life in New York City could be as quiet and cold as it can be, even with its proximity to Central Park or Washington Park or places like that. Locals go about their life as usual, not grappling with the business or erratic nature of affairs even a few blocks away.
