You would think that an artsy town like Cooper Young in Memphis would have more of the cultural manifestations reflecting the history and sentiments of Memphis. While there are a few (the Burkes Books Store being one of the few), a large part of this area seems to be artificially artsy, with fancy businesses attracting whatever local revenues they can.
I met with a young lady who was born & grew up in this neighborhood of Cooper Young. While she loves Memphis, she told me a lot of the currently seen murals are not a true reflection of African artists, but rather a fusion, with the art & the painting done with a more commercial idea in mind.
